ULL's Fendt Captures Austrian National Open
LEBRING, Austria - Down by two strokes heading into the final day, Louisiana's Philipp Fendt shot 69 (-3) to launch himself to a first-place finish at the Austrian National Open at GC Gut Murstätten in Lebring, Austria. Competing as an amateur, Fendt finished with a total of 16-under par, including a course-record round of 63 (-9) on Friday.

Key to his comeback victory was a chip-in birdie on No. 11 and a 40-foot putt for another birdie on No. 18. His 17-year old sister, Ines, caddied for him throughout the tournament en route to the four-stroke win.

"I felt really comfortable out there," said Fendt. "After shooting a 63, it really helped boost my confidence. I've been waiting to shoot that low for a long time and feel like it's going to carry over next season for the Cajuns."

The win should seal an invite to the World Amateur Championship Buenos Aries, Argentina in late October for the Austrian native.

"I couldn't be happier for him," said UL head coach Theo Sliman. "He's a deserving young man and good person. It's always great to see great people win championships, especially after all the hard work Philipp has put into it."

"A course record and a round of 63 is something that will never be taken away from him," added Sliman.  "When he comes in next year to lead this time he will have this great success to draw on."

Incoming UL freshman, Christoph Weninger also put in a strong showing after making the cut on Friday. Weninger finished at 7-over in a tie for 35th place out of the field of 126 golfers.

"I'm anxious to see Christoph this upcoming season," said Sliman. "Playing with his fellow countryman and friend this weekend should allow him to come here and feed off that kind of performance."
