ULL softball picks up honors
The Ragin’ Cajuns finished second in the NFCA Leadoff Classic despite going a perfect 5-0 on the weekend. Depaul took first place based on run differential between common opponents.
Four Cajuns were recognized on the All-Tournament Team. Ashley Brignac, Matte Haack, Nerissa Myers, and Katie Smith were all selected to the team.
Brignac was 3-0 in the tournament and picked up a save in the win over No. 12 Michigan. The senior ace threw a total of 20 innings allowing just three earned runs and struck out 20 hitters. Brignac started two games and threw a complete game in both and finished with an ERA of 1.05.
Haack was the Cajuns most prolific run producer in the Classic driving in a team-high nine runs and posted a .421 batting average. The junior had three doubles, a triple, .684 slugging percentage and posted an on base percentage of .421.
Myers led the squad with an on base percentage of .550, drawing five walks. The shortstop recorded a .357 average, with six runs scored and a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases. Myers had a two-run inside the park homerun against Michigan and totaled four RBI over the five games.
Smith led the Cajuns with a .471 batting average and was tied for the team lead with Haack for the team lead with eight hits. The outfielder scored five runs, a double, one RBI and was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
Louisiana returns to action this weekend as they play host in the 2012 Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational at Lamson Park March 2-4. UL will be joined in the tournament by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Kentucky, Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls State.
