Sun Belt Sends Three to Bowls
NEW ORLEANS - The Sun Belt Conference will send three teams to postseason bowl games for the second consecutive season and only the second time in the league’s brief 11 year history.
Arkansas State won the Sun Belt Conference regular season championship on Saturday with a win over Troy. The Red Wolves finished SBC play with an unblemished 8-0 record. ASU became only the third program in Sun Belt history to finish league play undefeated. ASU, which has a 10-2 overall record, will play Mid-American Conference champion Northern Illinois in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on January 8.
Louisiana-Lafayette learned that it will play San Diego State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. The Cajuns will be making its first bowl appearance since joining the Sun Belt when they face-off against the Aztecs on December 17. A Sun Belt Conference representative has won the last two R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowls and four of the last five games.
FIU will be making its second consecutive appearance in the postseason having gotten an invitation to play in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl against Marshall on December 20. FIU enters the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl with an 8-4 record which is the best mark for the young Panther program that has only played in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 2005. The Panthers jumped into the national spotlight early in the season with a 3-0 start on the year – including a win over Big East co-champion Louisville.
Since the 2005 football season – the first season following major college football realignment – the Sun Belt Conference ranks fifth out of the 11 FBS conferences in postseason bowl game winning percentage. In fact, the Sun Belt Conference ranks ahead of noted “Big Six” leagues – the Big 12, ACC and the Big Ten. Furthermore, the Sun Belt Conference outpaces its non-automatic qualifying BCS partners in the WAC, Conference USA and the MAC.
