Tulane nabs five All-Conference awards
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane baseball team earned five postseason honors from Conference USA on Tuesday (May 25) as the All-Conference baseball squad and specialty awards were announced. Tulane's Rob Segedin earned All C-USA First Team honors, giving the Green Wave at least one player on the first team since the conference's inception in 1996, Nick Pepitone was named to the Second Team and a trio of rookies were named to the All-Freshman Team.
"These are very deserving honors for these five players," said Tulane head coach Rick Jones. "Rob Segedin had a tremendous year for us and Nick Pepitone was a mainstay in our bullpen. Brandon, Blake and Garrett all have the numbers that show they are deserving of their honors. The fact that all five of these players are tremendous students and are great representatives of our university makes this honor even more special."
Segedin earned his second career selection to the All-Conference USA team as a First Team selection. The redshirt-sophomore was named to the Second Team as a rookie in 2008 and moved onto the First Team after having one of the most productive offensive seasons in school history. He posted a .434 batting average with 55 runs scored, 29 doubles and 54 RBI's, ranking among the league leaders in all four categories.
The Old Tappan, N.J native ranks among the school's single season leaders in batting average (2nd), slugging percentage (.788, 3rd), on-base percentage (.516, 3rd), doubles (T-2nd) and total bases (167, T-9th). The right-handed hitter carried hitting streaks of 19 and 18-games this season, while reaching base safely in 54 of 55 games this season - including all 24 Conference USA games. On the national scene, he ended the regular season ranked third in doubles, 11th in batting average and slugging percentage, 14th in total bases and 18th in hits.
Pepitone was one of the most dominant closers in Conference USA this season, owing a 6-0 record with eight saves in 28 appearances. The eight saves are tied for tenth on the single season charts at TU, while ranking 53rd nationally in 2010. He held opposing batters to a .190 batting average and allowed just ten of 27 inherited runners to score this season to earn All-Conference USA Second Team honors.
His 28 appearances were fourth among Conference USA pitchers this season and he recorded the final out in 25 games for the Olive and Blue this season, the most games finished in Conference USA this year. He allowed more than one earned run in just three of his 28 outings, while recording at least one strikeout in 21 of 28 appearances.
The All-Freshman team consisted of three rookies from the Green Wave squad, tying UCF for the most on the team this season, and ties the 2003 team for the most in school history. Brandon Boudreaux, Garrett Cannizaro and Blake Crohan all earned the All-Freshman team honors after having stellar first seasons on campus.
Boudreaux was a steady hand in the Tulane lineup this season, starting all 56 games and holding a batting average of over .300 from February 21 on. He posted 18 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI contests during his true-freshman season and 52 of 56 this year. The Mandeville, La. native owned a 15-game hitting streak earlier this season and also held a 12-game streak in Conference USA contests. He was second on the team with 30 walks and ended the season with the third highest batting average for the Green Wave at .323.
Cannizaro earned a spot on the All-Freshman team after posting a .322 batting average with 64 hits and 29 RBI's in 54 starts at shortstop this season. He becomes the second Cannizaro earn All-Freshman honors at Tulane, with his brother Andy earning the accolade in 1998. The right-handed hitter owned a season-best hitting streak of 15 games and owned 15 multi-hit and six multi-RBI games during his first season on campus. He ranked tenth in Conference USA in fielding assists (140) and was a part of 26 of the 39 double plays turned by TU this season.
Crohan started all 56 games this season with starts in left field, at catcher and at designated hitter. He reached base safely in the first 14 games of his career and was aboard in 21 of 24 Conference USA games. The Roswell, Ga. native ranked among the league leaders for most of the season in runs scored, hits and batting average, while owning a batting average of over .340 from February 21 through the end of the season. He ranked second on the team in batting average (.340), runs scored (53), hits (73) ans was third with 42 RBI's.
