Southern’s softball season ends in SWAC Tournament
Baton Rouge, LA - The Southern University softball team fell to the Alabama State University Lady Hornets 5-4 on day three of the 2010 SWAC softball tournament.
Southern (16-28) was led by juniors Victoria Stewart and Jasmone Williams who each went 2-for-4 in the eight inning affair. Sophomore Caroline Myers pitched a complete game for her season high. The Westwego, LA native gave up 10 hits and three earned runs but was responsible for 20 of the Lady Jaguars outs with 15 groundouts and five fly outs.
The Blue and Gold totaled nine hits in the game but needed one more as they left a runner on base in the top of the eight inning. ASU's Mercedes Frazier started in the bottom half by reaching first base after an SU error. After the first out was made State's JaVonna Grimsley hit a shot to shortstop who overthrew first base. Frazier, who had advanced to second during the first out play, took off for third and rounded the bag when she saw Jasmone Williams throw out Grimsley trying to advance to second off the error. Freshman Shawntall Steamer then turned and fired a shot to home attempting to prevent the winning run to cross but her shoot sailed high and Frazier slid low winning the contest 5-4 for the Lady Hornets.
The lost ends the season for Southern while Alabama State went on to fall 8-0 to the Mississippi Valley Devilettes who advanced to their seventh straight championship game.
