NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans scored six runs in its final two innings during an 11-5 win over visiting Southern on Tuesday at Maestri Field.

Pinch hitter Tyrone Wethers broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run double in the seventh, and leadoff hitter Craig Schnell later added a run-scoring triple, as UNO (9-18) won for the eighth time in its last 10 non-conference games.

Mike Petello hit two home runs, and Schnell added two hits and two RBIs. Wethers finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs. The Privateers hit three home runs and tallied 14 hits.

Ozzie Lamis went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Southern (9-12), and Frazier Hall went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Hall hit a game-tying three-run home run in the seventh to make it 5-5.

The Privateers, though, scored the game’s final six runs on five hits. Southern helped with three errors in the final two innings.

UNO used five pitchers on the night, and the group combined for 11 strikeouts.

Stanten Jones (0-1) got the loss, giving up four hits and four runs (two earned) in 2 1/3 innings. UNO reliever Cody Deckwa (1-0) was credited with the win.

Nick Schwaner hit his team-high eighth home run of the year in the fifth inning. Petello followed with a solo shot, as the Privateers scored five unanswered runs to grab a 5-2 lead.

UNO swept the home-and-home series with Southern. The Privateers also took a 13-7 win at Southern on March 17.

UNO will continue a five-game homestand this weekend with a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against Florida Atlantic. The series will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
