About the LA Sports Hall of Fame
The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame was begun by members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) who wanted to honor the state’s outstanding athletes and coaches. LSWA held their first election in 1958 with three inductees but their dream of a permanent home to honor the state’s outstanding athletes and coaches began in 1951. Induction ceremonies began in Shreveport and were held around the state to include locations such as LSU games and the VFW Sports Awards Banquet in New Orleans. In 1972, NSU provided the first actual Hall of Fame location in its’ Prather Coliseum where portraits and morabilia of the inductees remained until construction began on the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Museum in downtown Natchitoches.
After six decades of relentless effort, the Louisiana Sports Writers Associations’ dreams of a permanent home for Louisiana’s sports legends are coming true!
The selection process has remained consistent through the years with a 30 member Hall of Fame Selection Committee comprised of elected Louisiana Sports Writers conducting a two-month review process before electing no more than eight new members to the Hall of Fame. A standing ballot, typically including more than 100 candidates, is supplemented each year by new nominees. Nominations can be made by the public as well as by members of LSWA. As of 2012, over 250 distinguished inductees have been recognized as members of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
