In sports, when two evenly matched powerhouses square off, fans and players all want to see rematches.

It happens in every sport except for college football, but no two teams needed a rematch than Louisiana State and Alabama. In their first matchup, the teams went blow for blow in regulation, with the Tigers needing overtime to finish the Crimson Tide.

LSU head coach Les Miles referred to Alabama versus LSU as “Ali versus Frazier.” Quick history lesson, Frazier beat Ali the first time, but Ali won the last two of their spectacular trilogy.

This could prove true for Alabama. They lost the first matchup, but have definitely learned from their mistakes. No coach in college football is better at self-correcting than the Tide’s Nick Saban. With over a month to prepare, Saban and his staff had time to find every mistake the team made and think of ways to correct them.

Offensively, Alabama clearly struggled in the first meeting, but this matchup should be a better offensive outing for the Tide. Redshirt sophomore quarterback AJ McCarron may have benefited the most from the time off. McCarron struggled in the first matchup and it seemed as if the team’s confidence in him and his own confidence took a dip.

McCarron finished the season strong for the Tide and regained the love and praise from his teammates and the rest of Crimson Tide nation. LSU’s defense is so gifted at stopping the run, which means McCarron will have to make plays with his arm. It will be up to Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain to put him in a position to be successful. They will have to throw the ball earlier and often, mainly on first downs, to soften the defense and create running lanes for Trent Richardson.

Richardson will be a man on a mission in the Super Dome. He has a chip on his shoulder after losing to LSU once and also losing the Heisman trophy. Alabama’s play calling will be better this time around and they will find more creative ways to get Richardson the ball. Last time, they only gave it to Richardson three times once they crossed the LSU 40-yard line. They will not let that happen this game and expect Saban and his staff to give Richardson 25 plus carries, maybe even more than 30.

Saban knows this game is big for his legacy. With a win, he will become the first coach to win three BCS National Championship games. He is on the verge of being mentioned with the all-time great college football coaches and a win against a former team he coached would go a long way of putting him on the Mount Rushmore of college football head coaches.

If all else fails, Alabama will be better this time because it is simply too hard to beat a good team twice. Alabama losing the first matchup may have been a blessing in disguise because it gave them the opportunity to humble themselves and focus on what they needed to do to become a more complete team.

Look for the ‘Game of the Century’ part two to have more points from both teams and also a different winner.
