Z’s starting rotation taking shape
JUPITER, Fla. -- For the past month, they got a taste of big league camp. Now, several prospects will have time to get ready for their respective Minor League seasons.
The Marlins started off Wednesday by making 11 roster moves.
The transactions reduced the number in big league camp to 41, while it also put together most of the Triple-A New Orleans rotation.
Alex Sanabia and Sean West were optioned to Triple-A, while Shawn Hill and Tom Koehler were reassigned to Minor League camp. New Orleans is where they likely will wind up.
Also on Wednesday, outfielder Chris Lubanski was released. Catchers Kyle Skipworth and Vinny Rottino were reassigned to Minor League camp, relievers Steve Cishek and Dustin Richardson and outfielder Bryan Petersen were optioned to New Orleans, and Sandy Rosario was optioned to Double-A Jacksonville.
Being in Minor League camp will give West, Sanabia, Koehler and Hill a chance to stretch out and get ready for the season.
West, Sanabia and Hill each have big league experience. Koehler, meanwhile, is coming off a strong Double-A season, and he turned heads the past month.
"I was impressed with Koehler. That was the first time I saw him pitch," Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "I heard good reports on him. Having seen him pitch -- he's going to be able to help us at some point."
As for Sanabia, West and Hill, Rodriguez said they can get the innings they need and will be candidates to be brought up at a later date.
"Right now, I think they were throwing the ball well," Rodriguez said. "It's a matter of stretching them out. Regarding the quality of their pitches, they're fine. I think Sanabia needs to work on his slider. West needs to work on being more consistent -- the quality of the pitches are there. Then, it's a matter of stretching them out and seeing how far they can go."
