Z’s fall to Redbirds, 4-2
Daryl Jones hit a home run and had three RBIs to lead the Memphis Redbirds to a 4-2 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs at AutoZone Park in Memphis, Tenn.
The Zephyrs have lost three in a row and 10 of their past 14 games to fall below .500 for the first time since May 2nd.
Memphis starter Lance Lynn kept the Zephyrs offense quiet, he worked seven innings and earned his sixth win of the season, allowing two runs on six hits.
Tied at one in the bottom of the second, Jones drilled a two-run home run the bottom of the inning to give Memphis the lead 3-1. The Z's Joe Thurston hit a solo home run to right field in the fourth to cut the score to 3-2. Jones again came through for the Redbirds with an RBI single in the fifth to cap the scoring at 4-2.
Victor Marte earned his ninth save of the season and his third against the Zephyrs, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Mariano Gomez suffered his third loss in three starts for the Zephyrs.
Game Notes: Jose Lopez was promoted to the Florida Marlins. The Z’s added catcher Gregg Glime, Ozzie Martinez and signed outfielder DeWayne Wise as a free agent. Catcher Brad Davis was designated for assignment. Villanueva was optioned back to the Zephyrs after suffering the loss in his start in Philadelphia.
Coming Up: The New Orleans Zephyrs continue the eight-game road trip with the final game of the series with Memphis at 11:05 a.m. The Z’s will start RH Tom Koehler (5-3, 5.14) against RH PJ Walters (4-3, 5.05). RADIO: WMTI 106.1 FM.
