Monty Williams will announce his assistants today
New Orleans Hornets Coach Monty Williams will announce the addition of three assistant coaches to his staff today at the Alario Center.
As has been previously reported — but unconfirmed by Williams — Michael Malone and Bryan Gates will join the staff, as will James Borrego, who last worked with the San Antonio Spurs.
League sources said Williams has not yet filled the role of lead assistant coach.
Malone, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers, previously worked for four years with the New York Knicks. He also has seven years of college coaching experience, including stints at Manhattan and Virginia. He is the son of longtime NBA coach Brendan Malone.
Gates, who also has worked in the NBA Development League with the Idaho Stampede, including as head coach, was a member of Paul Westphal’s Sacramento Kings staff last season.
Borrego was an assistant on the San Antonio Spurs’ summer league team for the past six years, in addition to his duties as the team’s video coordinator. He was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for two seasons, after playing there for three years.
