FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas football team is nine days away from its season-opening game, but the physical and mental preparation needed for college football has already been set in motion. Head coach Bobby Petrino, entering his third season leading the Razorbacks, has seen his squad's sound leadership drive the learning process on the preseason practice fields.

"We're working on getting better each day technically," Coach Petrino said. "Our groups have done a great job taking pride in their own group; like the defensive backs, the linebacker group or the defensive line. That's the fun part to see that leadership throughout those groups. That's how you build a team."

Coach Petrino noted that the week before a game week can traditionally be a tough one, with classes beginning and practice continuing. However, the UA football team took the field each day with enthusiasm and aggressiveness.

"This is always the hardest week," Coach Petrino said. "School starts. You're two weeks away from the game. I liked the way we came out and attacked the week. We got a lot accomplished."

The Razorbacks' highly-touted offense returns standout signal caller Ryan Mallett, along with a stable of capable receivers. Coach Petrino has seen the stellar pass-catching group improve even more during August workouts.

"Joe (Adams), Jarius (Wright) and Greg (Childs) have done a nice job of pushing each other and pushing themselves," "They've improved on their routes, their technique catching the ball and being more physical running after making the catch."

The deep group of contributors at wide receiver is only an advantage, Coach Petrino noted, with underclassmen being in the fold to make a difference for the Razorbacks.

"Cobi (Hamilton) had a good camp," Coach Petrino said. "Our young guys did a nice job; it'll be interesting to see how that plays out."

Arkansas will practice Friday at 5 p.m., with the team simulating game situations. Practice is closed to the public. Fans should take note that the Razorbacks begin the new football season vs. Tennessee Tech in Fayetteville, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. For more on UA football, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
